TSMC Struggles with Yield on Apple's 3nm Chip

According to recent reports by DigiTimes, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is struggling with yield issues during the production of Apple's highly anticipated 3-nanometer chips. As one of Apple's primary chip suppliers, TSMC has been developing this technology for years to offer superior performance and power efficiency in smaller sizes. However, such smaller sizes pose significant technical challenges during the manufacturing process.

Sources suggest that TSMC's current yield rate for the 3nm process is approximately 50%, which is below the company's target of 80-90%. Due to this issue, the production process is experiencing delays and higher costs, which could impact the launch schedule of upcoming Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

The company plans to begin volume production of the 3nm chips in the second half of 2023, and Apple is expected to be one of their major customers. However, it remains unclear when TSMC will be able to fully resolve the yield issues.

While the situation may cause some concern for Apple and its customers, it is worth noting that the tech giant usually sources its components from multiple suppliers. This strategy may help mitigate potential delays, should the yield issues persist.

In the meantime, TSMC is working hard to improve its 3nm production process, and we can only hope that they will soon overcome these challenges to offer Apple the chips it needs to power its future devices.
